Recreation Center at Anderson Center Autism - Staatsburg, NY
The concept behind the +/- 8,759 sq. ft. ‘Rec Center’ design is reminiscent of a traditional barn structure, celebrating its simplicities while incorporating modern design elements. Contemporary architectural elements such as aluminum storefront entrance doors are flanked by false barn doors which integrate seamlessly with the design creating a balanced composition for the main entry. Tall and simple two over two double hung windows are also incorporated to reinforce the simplicity of the barn concept and also to counterbalance the horizontal nature of the structure as a whole.
Since the students are not able to be off site and have the experience of a traditional summer camp, the experience is brought on Campus with this new ‘Rec Center’. Situated in a large open field reinforces the park-like experience of the Center. It houses a large room for indoor gross motor activities with the flexibility for other uses, an attached outdoor pavilion, and a well equipped catering kitchen. While this covered outdoor pavilion provides the ideal setting to hold special event gatherings, it also shelters the students from the blazing sun and rain in those warm summer months, creating a place where they can have a sense of the outdoors and enjoy their activities.
