Cottage in the Woods - Ulster County NY
Set on a twelve acres property, not far from its main house counterpart, this 2,300 square feet guest cottage nestles nicely into the woods. While its architectural form is simple, taking the cues from its vernacular surrounding, the repeated geometry is playfully nested together like a series of “Matryoshka Doll” to blend and break up the building mass. The roofs hover, overlap and extend beyond one another, responding to the composition and working to shelter a single-story open floor plan with a loft and secondary bedroom suite.
The cottage’s wooded frame is cladded with Shou Sugi Ban Accoya siding and equipped with geothermal heating and cooling as part of sustainable design and living.
The main floor includes the master suite and a kitchen tucked cozily underneath the loft that flows seamlessly into the living/ dining area. With its double heighted volume, supported by custom designed trusses, all views of the living area are directed through the almost floor to ceiling windows to capture the vastness of the woods and its serenity.
