Copperheads - Millbrook, NY
At the top of a steep, forested slope overlooking the Hudson Valley to the south and west, "Copperheads" rendered in Greek Revival style, has sat for over 150 years. Built over an existing building that rested on full sized logs, with bark intact, the post and beam construction hand-hewn of chestnut and hand-forged nails had survived decades of powder post beetles and carpenter ants. Original glazing in many of the windows, as well as original columns of the Doric order, begged for restoration.
The current owners, delighting in the historical details and exquisite site of the house, have done extensive research and worked over a period of years to restore different portions of the house in phases. Sloan Architects was retained to review, design, and oversee all aspects of the restoration.
